A Valentine’s day date

February 14th again? Where does the time go… Time to gear up and get ready for love. But along with all the fine feelings come a few practical considerations. Card. Gift. Dinner. Wine. Things like that.

You could make your own card. It isn’t hard and it will be seen as another sign of the deep feelings you have for that special someone. You express your own words and images or perhaps borrow some good ones from the poets and artists in a way that’s unique. An hour on the computer or at the table with scissors and pen and you’ve conquered step one.

Now for the gift. That’s always hard, isn’t it? Should you go traditional or quirky? Whichever way you decide, there are a thousand possibilities. Jewelry never goes out of style and it’s easy to personalize. Pick out the birthstone of your special someone. You do know their birthmonth, right? Now you’re ready to move on to the next step.

Wait. Back up. Get two gifts. Maybe three. Flowers, chocolates and maybe a gift basket with a stuffed bear that says ‘I REALLY Do Love You More Than My Car’. Or, choose a phrase that’s romantic.

Prepare for dinner. Or, prepare dinner. Whichever works for you and your date. Your skills may enable you to make superb Pad Thai noodles. Or, your date may be more the Chateaubriand type. The key element is to choose something that suits them. That shows you know what they like. Very important.

If you go out to dinner, that is still just as important. Sure, he or she gets to order anything desired from the menu. But each restaurant has a limited selection. You’re unlikely to get a fine linguini in clam sauce at a Chinese restaurant. So choosing the place is as important as choosing the recipe in the previous scenario.

Don’t forget the wine. Oh, that’s essential. Sure, your special someone likes coffee, tea or even Diet Coke. But this is Valentine’s Day and wine is a must. Surprise him or her. Don’t let them choose. Make sure you pick the right one.

What? Don’t let them choose? But you said they should pick just what… Yes, yes. That’s food. Choosing wine is like choosing a gift. You have to pick just the right one for them in order to show you know and appreciate their taste. Each person has his or her favorite. Knowing what that is shows you’ve been paying attention.

Whew…. Now the hard part is all done. You can relax and enjoy the evening. Good food, great wine and a gift that brought a light to the eyes. You were a big hit because you took the time to do it right.
