Best Date Movies

There has always been a glut of date movies – some you swoon at, while some manage to make you hurl. What exactly makes a great date movie? A good general theme, for one. Of course, here, nothing beats messages about love, and good winning over evil. A second criterion is that it should be fun. A movie on a date is a shared activity. And while weeping or fierily debating about a social issue may level up your relationship by a notch, nothing beats a good laugh. The last is the romantic element. What’s a date movie if it doesn’t make you feel all mushy inside? Here are some favorites:

Love, Actually

Set in London two months before Christmas, lives are intertwined by their touching and funny circumstances, which can only be explained with the fact that love is the major driving force in everyone’s lives. The movie stars Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Keira Knightly, Colin Firth, and Laura Linney.

Mamma Mia

A fairly new addition, this musical speaks of love’s adventures using Abba’s tongue. The movie is especially fun for those above thirty. It stars Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgard, Colin Firth, Julie Walters, Christine Baranski, Dominic Cooper, and Amanda Seyfried.

Notting Hill

Another Hugh Grant starrer, this movie is a romantic comedy about a bookshop owner and a Hollywood celebrity. It stars Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts.

Sleepless In Seattle

A date movie list isn’t a date movie list if it doesn’t have the ultimate mush-fest Sleepless In Seattle. The movie is about finding love again and stars Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.

While You Were Sleeping

A light-hearted comedy starring Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman, the movie is about a woman who falls in and out of love of with a comatose man she doesn’t even really know.

Jerry Maguire

Of course, we have all heard the line “You complete me.” Jerry Maguire is a feel-good film about a sports manager who finds himself, love, and a brand new sports management career after getting his conscience back.

Ever After

Starring Drew Barrymore, Anjelica Huston, and Dougray Scott, Ever After is a Cinderella story that’s bitingly funny and updated.

Shakespeare In Love

An Academy award winning film, Shakespeare In Love is about Shakespeare falling in love with a certain Viola and a theatre actor Thomas (for his acting skills), not knowing that these two characters are just the same person.
